That issue should have been largely fixed, so I will leave this as a separate issue.

This would probably have to be a more sophisticated tall layout.

It might be easier to track it as a property on the window directly like we do with floating. Just track a window weight and have layouts that use it...

I think this has been implemented by #1319

As others have said, the system has a configurable command for displaying the desktop. Additionally, layout toggling has been implemented in #1358.

I think this should be fixed by #1360

There's intention, I just haven't really had time. Someone is welcome to make the contribution in the meantime.
