This seems related to performance problems in #1706 which was closed due to in-activity rather than being resolved. Particularly for Zoomable data, downsampling is not the right thing to do....

PR is up... seems to work. I'll continue to use it in my private fork but it would be nice to see it merged or at least commented on.
