What about staying on libmysql then? Does the server provide some helpful logs about that failing authentication? I'm otherwise not sure where to start here, and I suppose your password...

Ah and one more thing: the current v12.11 has a newer libmariadb, so that would be worth an attempt if that fixes the issue.

If the issue persists with v12.11 and the newer libmariadb please shout.
