swipe only from the edge?

I have a map as one of my tabs and currently it's difficult to pan the map without triggering a swipe of the tabs. I've tried changing the sensitivity, but can't seem to find the right balance. I wondered if it is possible to only trigger a swipe from the very edge of the device? That way, I could at least pan the map from the center of the device.
