Selecting Parent Categories in Term Settings Displays Nothing on Homepage

When using Parent Category->Sub Category structure, if you select the Parent Category for the Featured Displays ont he homepage no posts are displayed. You need to choose each subcategory separately in order for posts to display.

category__in does not include child categories. In order to select its children categories I believe you will need to check through every category for their child categories which might slow down the loading process.
