ASCII/Unicode in-application approximate rendering of images

Open TheOneWithTheBraid opened this issue 5 years ago • 5 comments

It would be nice if received images were rendered in ASCII. Currently, I always need to download them first and render them in ASCII afterwards.

This feature is very important for those users who really do not have a graphical Desktop.

Thanks @JasMich for your feedback. I wanted to have this feature in zt way back, thanks for the reminder.

I don't think ASCII images would be too useful for most people; in order to get any level of clarity, you'd need to have crazy large terminal dimensions. I'd recommend implementing a framebuffer image display, similar to w3m-img or fbi, although I'm not sure how difficult that would be in python. Apparently this guy did it?

Hey @amanagr , Should this issue be still worked upon ? Wouldn't the clarity of image be reduced for the user (maybe , attach the link as well with it ?) .

Yes, you can work on this issue. Please discuss your approach in #zulip-terminal stream in czo before proceeding.
