Unable to send a message to my friend until he sent me a message

iOS to iOS

I would send messages, but only get a single check. My friend had the app open and running, but nothing I sent would go through to him. Once he sent me a message, I received it and could send him messages. The previous ones I tried to send, however, didn't go through.

Both on iPhone 6, build 90
