I'm happy to merge a PR but probably won't look into this. I recommend looking at fontforge and see if the generated output is compatible with IE8.

I tried the JS fix on IE8 but I'm getting numbers instead:  I'm not clear on how to generate the CSS version with fontcustom.

It should be possible to have at least IE7 support. See FontCustom/fontcustom#43
