How to download a specific 3D model for a given address?

Open miloit opened this issue 3 weeks ago • 4 comments

Hello, and thank you for this great project!

I’m trying to download the 3D building model for a specific address, but I’m not sure which files or API endpoints I should use.

Could you clarify:

  1. Whether it is possible to request or extract one specific building by address or coordinates?

  2. If so, which dataset or tool in this repository should I use?

  3. Is there an example workflow for downloading a single building model (OBJ/GLB/etc.) rather than an entire region?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I, too, am interested in this as I am attempting to place individual buildings to create a more intuitive map for a fire department.

This dataset has a bunch of inaccuracies and there are no 3D models (OBJ/GLB/etc.). It seems that 2D building shapes from various sources have been given a height. The output is a GeoJSON with a single, inaccurate height information per "building".

Promoting OpenStreetMap as a data source:

I'd suggest to download shapes from https://overpass-turbo.eu. Click on "Export" in the header to learn about their API endpoints or download the queried region.

  • https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/2gLg To get all kinds of buildings:
[out:json][timeout:25];
nwr["building"]({{bbox}});
out geom;

For a few buildings the amount of levels, roof details, colors or height information have been mapped. Using this info might make a 3D visualisation more beautiful. People have been building impressive 3D maps with OpenStreetMap data, e.g. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/F4_Map

Much appreciated @jaller94.

To be clear, you are saying that by using the script you provided in the query tool, I might be able to generate a detailed enough 3d image so I can make a 3D print of said building?

It actually depends how detailled you want the 3D print to be. Usually you might get the shape and height of the building but no realistic building roof or textures. You could check this map created from OSM data to see if this is sufficient for you to work with https://streets.gl/.
