Disable SNES backgrounds or move to backmost layer?

Is there an option to disable the SNES backgrounds in retroarch menu? It's a fantastic upgrade but makes non-SNES games cropped (or smushed if using the borders), GBA in particular....

Famicom Mini goes to black when scrolling through resolution settings (Genesis core)

While scrolling through the different resolutions in the retroarch settings, my Famicom Mini eventually goes to black. Shutting it off seems to do nothing, requires me to unplug the power....
