Media: Video and PDF Thumbnails

Open zcolah opened this issue 1 year ago • 5 comments

Problem

Currently users cannot only a see an icon for a video and for a pdf. This makes it difficult for a user to quickly differentiate between multiple video tiles and pdf tile cards.

Solution

Hence we want to introduce a visual thumbnail so that is easier for the user to differentiate between files.

We want to start providing thumbnail previews for:

High Priority Videos (.mov, .mp4, .avi) PDFs

Very Low Priority Powerpoint Word Docs Excel Docs

Questions

Can we implement this? Will this need a new field added to the end point? This could be added to the endpoint but could users also update the thumbnail after uploading the file? If yes, then a new API just for updating the thumbnail will be needed How complex would this be? This would require an additional field in the database (thumbnailURL)

@zcolah I'd like to elevate this issue. As the preview icon when a user uploads a pdf file makes it look like the resource or reference is broken Screenshot 2024-01-11 at 9 38 18 AM

Also noting that this is how it displays in the table view for content items. The "Media Content" column has PDFs selected for the top 2 items but it looks like a broken reference

@giseleblair we cannot provide a PDF preview thank you raising this issue. I have raised it in the past and been informed that we currently do not have the resources to prioritize showing an exact thumbnail preview of a PDF and video.

However we should be showing a PDF and Video Icon for these items in the Media Field and in the table and I will make a ticket for the same.

yes an icon would be ideal, no need to preview the actual content. For example, the PDF icon in the Media modal is great.
