I'm a little worried it is as well. However, my use of ZMQ is also diminishing, so I can't fork it usefully either

I tried ffi-rzmq, rbzmq and rbczmq and none of them seems to be actively maintained (ffi is closest). I wonder why there's no up2date ruby bindings for zmq ...

FWIW I was able to get https://github.com/chuckremes/ffi-rzmq working with zmq v4.
