adding communities through `.zenodo.json` does not work

Using the .zenodo.json to specify communities, as instructed

{ ...
"communities": [{"identifier":"test_community"}]
}

does not work. Zenodo support responded

Unfortunately, adding communities through the Github's metadata is something that is not working at the moment and it should. That being said, we are now tracking this issue and will work on it as soon as possible. Note that it might take some time until we are able to fix it since our team is currently working at full capacity in multiple fronts.

And a solution is pending.

Are there any updates on the status of this issue? I encountered it today and can verify that the communities metadata value is still ignored.
