What happened?

After updating to 1.12.8b, compact view stopped working at all. I've tried turning it on and off, removing all mods and custom CSS, restarting the browser, closing and reopening windows (since I already had an issue where that was a workaround, #7682 ). Only option I have is to have the bars visible. I'm on EndeavourOS, Zen installed from AUR.

Dunno if it helps, but same issue on W11 with Zen Or Zen Twilight. Tried uninstall/reinstall, disabling all themes, nothing working.

Had a similar issue after upgrading to 1.12.8b on Arch Linux. I checked the settings and "Hide Both" was enabled in Look and Feel. Tried restarting but no luck.

I got it working by right clicking on the toolbar and enabling/checking the compact mode (https://docs.zen-browser.app/user-manual/compact-mode). Not sure why it was unchecked after the upgrade. It is also a bit counter-intuitive to not have that checkbox as a setting in the Look and Feel settings but only "Hide Both".

@wwklnd Can you right-click the tab or the top bar and check if compact mode is enabled? As @ShikharArvind also found, the settings menu only configures what the mode does but does not turn it on.

Oh, this worked for me. I had no idea about that right click menu, it's very odd that changing it in settings didn't work, but the right click menu did. Now things seem to be back to before with #7682 where 2/3 windows open without compact mode active.

I did what ShikharArvind suggested above and that seems to have fixed the issue, sort of. Now when I restart the browser, only 2/3 windows have compact mode turned off (as per #7682 ), and I can turn it on by using the right click menu as was suggested above.

There's also a configurable keyboard shortcut to toggle it on/off, default Ctrl + Alt + C . That is maybe faster.

Glad this was solved by turning it on.
