HDR on Linux doesn't work when Zen is in Windowed mode. It does work however if:

  1. HDR video is played through PiP
  2. Zen is maximized
  3. Video is full screened.

Disabling rounded corners seem to have 0 effects

Version

1.12.5b

What platform are you seeing the problem on?

Linux (Tarball)

What component is this issue related to?

To clarify: "Doesn't work" means HDR content is washed out/mapped to SDR.

It does work however if:

  1. HDR video is played through PiP
  2. Zen is maximized
  3. Video is full screened.

This means it works if any one of those conditions is met, right? If all of them have to be met I'm shocked you got it working at all

Yes. I am 99% sure this is caused by rounded window corners. For whatever reason, the effect cannot be disabled on the Linux build of Zen. Would be nice if this was addressed.

To enable HDR:

  1. Enable HDR in your compositor (KDE Plasma, GNOME or Hyprland)
  2. Enable gfx.wayland.hdr
  3. Enable layout.css.video-dynamic-range.allows-high

It works just fine and HDR content is displayed properly if any one of those conditions are met. This is not a super accurate representation but I've attached some images below:

Hi, @Weather-OS. I'm Dosu, and I'm helping the desktop team manage their backlog. I'm marking this issue as stale.

Issue Summary:

  • HDR content appears washed out and is mapped to SDR in windowed mode on Linux, version 1.12.5b.
  • The issue does not occur in Picture-in-Picture, maximized, or full-screen modes.
  • Suspected cause is related to rounded window corners, which cannot be disabled on Linux.
  • Steps to enable HDR and images illustrating the issue were provided.

Next Steps:

  • Please confirm if this issue is still relevant to the latest version of the desktop repository. If so, you can keep the discussion open by commenting here.
  • If there is no further activity, this issue will be automatically closed in 7 days.

The whole entire rounded window thing causing HDR content to look washed out was fixed by the KDE team! HDR Content is now properly displayed in windowed mode!
