What happened?

Reopening https://github.com/zen-browser/desktop/issues/504 because the ram usage is still too high (also reported by other users) Users ram usage of zen

Additional evidence from me With similar number of tabs (more than 10), Zen consumes more ram than Chrome

Holy- I get like 1.1GB and even as low as 800MB on Mac with 52 tabs open. Im on MacOS 12. Did your issue get fixed?

EDIT: it appears I am mistaken.

That's not even funny, I literally have 4 active tabs rn and browser needs nearly 3.5gb ram to keep them work. Guys you need to fix this, that's fucked

Can confirm- It takes around 5GB for me. Not ideal.

High memory usage is not necessarily a memory leak. Zen's buffering and caching preferences have been tweaked from the Firefox defaults in such a way that more memory is allowed to be used. When you have it, better use it. RAM is a lot faster than disk or downloading again. While those settings could improve performance on PCs with ample memory, they're not as 'safe' as the Firefox defaults on low-spec devices.... or in scenarios where other app also demand a lot of memory.

That said, the dev is looking at these settings again. Especially the (shared) GPU memory usage can grow quite high, which is most obvious on devices with an iGPU where RAM is used for GPU memory.

To confirm where your Zen's RAM consumption comes from, you can use the built in process manager via shift+esc

I can confirm, it takes 8GB for me with around 10 tabs open. (on a 16GB Mac Air)

There is definitely a memory leak. I was at 13gb of memory used with it peaking at 15gb before I closed it. It normally is at about 2.5-3gb of memory usage

Please see how to report this here: https://github.com/zen-browser/desktop/issues/8932. Screenshots of just the task manager is as useless as "zen uses lots of ram"

Is this actually completed? Over the past few hours, I watched memory consumption grow to about 10GiB?
