Just came across this issue: https://github.com/noffle/electron-speech/issues/10 -- [sonus](https://github.com/evancohen/sonus/) appears to be actively maintained. Could be a good alternative.
Looks like sox is a dependency of [snowboy](https://github.com/Kitt-AI/snowboy) -- maybe that could be made optional in sonus? cc @evancohen
