Unable to Install PWA on Desktop

Open Penknife0915 opened this issue 9 months ago • 4 comments

Currently,

The PWA can be added to Android devices by selecting "Add to Home screen," but it lacks an "Install" button.

On desktop browsers, the PWA feature is absent. The URL bar doesn't show an installation badge (icon), and there's no "install" item in the browser's drop-down menu.

What instance and browser are you using? After testing a few instances from the list, including nitter.net, they all gave me the option to install them on mobile Firefox and the option to add them as a search engine in desktop Firefox.

Instance: nitter.net Browser: Brave on mobile, Chrome on desktop

These are from the last time I tested.

Gave a quick check with lighthouse in Chrome, it was complaining about "start_url" being missing in the site's webmanifest. Seems like adding it back in fixes it. Take a look at https://nitter.catsarch.com and see if you get the option now.

I'm not sure why it seems to work on mobile Firefox for me without that though. Maybe Firefox doesn't care about there being no start_url?

Looks like there originally was a start_url specified, but it was removed in https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/commit/1fc6a4092e6b0ee0e366fcbb1bfbbbf7330b7ae2. All I did was add that line back on my instance and it seems to resolve the problem.

Hm, I removed it by recommendation of some tool that said it was unnecessary or something, don't recall.
