Focus switching causes status bar items to get out of sync

Describe the bug / provide steps to reproduce it

1. Open the terminal panel
2. Click back and forth between the editor and the terminal panels via the content
3. 💥
4. observe the status bar line count and language not changing correctly

I believe this is because the set_active_pane_item isn't being called correctly. Note that you do get the right behavior if you click on the tabs for each item.
