Is it possible to automatically calculate the layout of maps?

Thank you for developing this app! It provides a very pleasant clear visualization of pathway maps.

But when I try to construct my own map, the layout can always be a headache

I wonder whether the clear and beautiful layout in Escher can be generated by some automatic algorithm or if we have to manually adjust the layout until we are satisfied by the results?
