I am also having this issue. Running ESPHome 2023.2.0 and Home Assistant 2023.2.4. It worked fine after update. I "restarted" HASS through the web UI, and it continued working fine....

FWIW I agree with reasoning behind this, and have noticed some of the same issues on my own setup at home. Reverting the change but keeping the improvements from #6180...
