Maybe the artifacts comes from the fact that the hillshade is fully black, but the hillshade information is in the alpha channel. I don't know how the JPEG compression works...

Ah yes, most certainly the Aster parts. Needs to find some disk for Opensnowmap's server this summer to try and fix this with ALOS or else, I hope it rains...
