Zelda: Link's Awakening choppy intro

Zelda's cartoonish intro up to the shore and clouds sequence run really choppy for no apparent reason, because the game then runs stable 60fps. It's not a weak HW problem but some strange timing issue for the intro only (playing movies issue?).
