Log in correctly on Google Drive. Try to backup on.

SmartTube isn't backing up to Google Drive. The notification bubble indicates success, but neither the SmartTube folder nor the backup files appear in Google Drive. Everything was working fine before the security breach incident, with the old app version.

I can confirm this, as I have the same issue on my Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 with SmartTube 30.59.

@giuseppebin It seems you got the version number wrong in your issue, just FYI.

Ops. Thanks :)

Reading the release notes again, it's only the restore option that has been fixed. Can't try it because I don't have any backups yet :)

I just updated to 30.68, the version with new options for backing up to Google Drive. Just to be sure, I've signed into my Google Account again and then created a backup to Google Drive.

I've waited for the "Done" dialog and then checked my Google Drive, but nothing has been backed up there. There are no folders created by SmartTube.

@yuliskov Can you please check?

NotoriousNico avatar Dec 18 '25 20:12 NotoriousNico

Sure, I'll check it. On the drive should be the folder named SmartTubeBackup. Sometimes it appears later. Can you check, the restore inside the app doesn't work too?

Regards, Yuriy

@yuliskov Hi Yuriy,

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. There's no folder named "SmartTubeBackup" inside my Google Drive. I've also tried creating that folder manually, but it remains empty after creating a backup. There's also no activity under the "Recent" tab on my Google Drive, that relates to SmartTube.

When I click on "Restore" inside SmartTube, I can choose between these two entries:

  • org.smarttube.stable
  • com.teamsmart.videomanager.tv

To double-check, I've cleared SmartTube's App Data, uninstalled it completely, reinstalled the latest version, signed in to my YouTube and Google Drive account and then hit "Restore" again. I get the same two entries as before and when choosing "org.smarttube.stable" and then restarting SmartTube, I now get this error message:

Image

Once I sign in again, everything seems to be normal again. When I try to now create a Google Drive backup, I need to sign in to my Google Drive account again. After that, I can create a new backup.

The remaining questions are:

Why is there no "SmartTubeBackup" folder in my Google Drive and how can I get rid of the old "com.teamsmart.videomanager.tv" backup, that I no longer need?

For what it's worth: I manually deleted the "SmartTubeBackup" folder (and all files inside it) on my Google Drive, when your App got compromised, just to be sure. But this shouldn't have any effect on the current situation, right?

NotoriousNico avatar Dec 19 '25 08:12 NotoriousNico

So, the restore from GDrive actually working but you just can't find the backup folder, right? That's ok. The folder exists then. I don't know why but I had the same problem when tested that functional on start. I've found it using search as remember correctly. I'll add the ability to remove the backup from the app later.

Regards, Yuriy

Yes, that's the case, after further investigation. Not sure about the error message, though. But everything seems to be working fine. It's just strange that even when searching Google Drive, I just can't find anything. But at least you had the same issue, so that's good to know. 😅

Thanks again for looking into this!

Looking at the activity in Google drive I see a file backup.zip being uploaded to location org.smarttube.stable. Not folder SmartTubeBackup. I think the org. locations are hidden from normal view in Google Drive but they are there.

Because org.smarttube.stable is used, this would mean it isn't shared with any beta version (so you can't backup in stable and restore in bèta, I assume).

@rvk01

GDrive doesn't have a regular path system as you get used to. It may seem that uploaded items orphaned, but that's not so. The app is actually getting the backup SmartTubeBackup/<app_id>/backup.zip

yuliskov avatar Dec 19 '25 13:12 yuliskov

@NotoriousNico may I ask you to check one bug related to GDrvive restore? It exposes when the user has multiple accounts (channels). The main account where you did the backup was restored completely, but others aren't. For example, the search history may not be restored on the other accounts. I can reproduce the issue, but I'm sure it exists.

@yuliskov I had a folder named SmartTubeBackup in my Google drive. But that's only been used until the end of November. The new version doesn't use that folder anymore. If I look in the online GUI of Drive, I see backup.zip is saved to a "location" named org.smarttube.stable. You can call it what you want, but that's different from the old method where you had a location SmartTubeBackup. See: https://i.imgur.com/gQmohAV.png I'm not sure if <app_id> is in SmartTubeBackup, but I renamed SmartTubeBackup to SmartTubeBackup.old and there is no such folder created anymore.

BTW. I don't mind if it's stored as App-data now. It's just different from how it used to be. That's all. And that's why you can't see it directly in Drive. You should be able to view it under Settings>Manage Apps (but there it doesn't show the size used).

rvk01 avatar Dec 19 '25 13:12 rvk01

@yuliskov

I only use one account (my main account) with SmartTube. I'm the sole user of my TV, so there aren't any other accounts associated with it or SmartTube.

NotoriousNico avatar Dec 19 '25 13:12 NotoriousNico

That's weird. I removed all SmartTubeBackup.old folders en purged the bin. Then with another version of 30.68 (updated today) I tried to restore (which failed). I did a backup there and now I do see it created SmartTubeBackup including the visible org.smarttube.stable inside. Apparently just renaming the SmartTubeBackup doesn't remove the internal link and it's still accessible for apps.

rvk01 avatar Dec 19 '25 14:12 rvk01

No problem, maybe someone can confirm the issue https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube/issues/5177#issuecomment-3675123005

yuliskov avatar Dec 19 '25 14:12 yuliskov

@rvk01, probably even after renaming the folder still is still accessible by its old name. First, I search for the name SmartTubeBackup and then show its contents in the dialog
