Additional information
When trying to update SmartTube, it reports that:
The app has been closed due to security concerns. Read the announcement on the official site
It is unclear what the official site is, but changes to the README this week show the addition of sections which seem to imply that development is continuing. This post from this week suggests the same.
If SmartTube is discontinued and/or retired, please state so clearly. "Closing an application" generally means terminating it gracefully by exiting it.
If this app has been closed permanently, I think it will fix my YouTube addiction. Still, this is a very disappointing development. (potentially) Shutting down right when Google is about to get more control of the internet is both saddening and suspicious.
Some versions were compromised. Remove, revoke access and install the latest stable.

I revoked all access (including Google Drive) and deleted the app before reinstalling, but this resulted in both the Google Drive and the on-device backups being deleted, so I can't restore and would have to set up everything from scratch.
It would be great if this were called out in the announcement.

I don't believe this is accurate. Granted, what you describe would remove access to Google Drive. But it shouldn't remove any backups stored there. What I did was...after installing the new app, setup Google Drive access again, and then ran a Restore. After a few minutes, my settings were there again. Though it took a few minutes for my settings to "take." Not sure why, but I had to exit and come back in a few times before I saw the new settings.
I am not sure if this site is also related to this but it does redirect me to ads. I already reported it to Google if you all also want do it we can brake it's ranking
I just got an update notification within version SmartTube Beta 30.50 to upgrade to version 30.55. Stating, the warning message that is the subject of this thread. However, version 30.56 seems to be the latest release for the Beta branch. Is this update notification legit? Or should I uninstall 30.50 and update manually?
If updating manually is recommended, how do I preserve my local backup? I can't seem to access the backup directory (in order to back it up) using X-plore, and if I uninstall STN-B, I'll lose the backup. If 30.50 is compromised, I would imagine, backing up to Google Drive would be ill advised.
Latest beta seems to be 30.56. Which version do we actually need to install and where is it?

you will see latest stable and beta version here. pick what you want/need and install it. I did install it via adblink and after successful installation, I restored the local backup I made inside the "old" apps before to the "new" apps and deinstalled the "old" apps. I don't see any difference so it all went great and flawlessly!
I wasn't sure if cr41g1w & gitttt54 were responding to me, specifically. But it seems they were. So, I'll clarify.
I was trying to ascertain if Beta 30.50 was a compromised version, as it was installed prior to my being aware of the library injection/hijacking. I'd prefer not to uninstall that version before I can secure the local backup. Which I'm unable to do, as attempts to access /storage/emulated/0/data/com.likovsoft.smarttubetv.beta/Backup with X-Plore fail. I can't get passed the Android "Open from" "helper". It never returns me to X-Plore so I can copy the directory. If this has to be done from the ADB, OK. I haven't done anything ADB in years, but it is a command line, not rocket science.
If Beta 30.50 is a non-compromised version, the need to backup the backup, is likely moot. If I can upgrade to the latest version from Beta 30.50, my settings should be inherited, correct? Or will the change in package name {org.smarttube.*), mean I still have to find a way to backup my settings?
FYI, I also had Stable installed as a fallback. I don't remember which version it was. I uninstalled it because it was compromised (Google Play disabled it) and it had a completely different package name. Lastly, I rarely used it, so I felt it was no big loss to loose those settings. I could start with a fresh install and just tweak like I did before, I just was hoping there was an "easier" way. I am currently using Stable 30.56 (will be upgrading to 30.64 soon) in the interim, while I sort things out.
BTW, this may be outside the scope of this thread. But some advice I've seen suggests doing a factory reset. Something I'm not too keen to do. Is this really necessary, or is revoking Google account permissions and uninstallation sufficient? Once I determine whether it's worth it to retrieve the local backup.

Figured this part out. Not sure if this is a bug or the intended behavior. But after granting access with the "USE THIS FOLDER" button, then manually backing out to X-plore (I seem to recall this being automatic in the past), a "new" "data" folder appears in the X-plore lister (again, in the past, I recall being placed in the right directory, automatically). I'm guessing it's a kin to a symlink? Anyway, I can now gain access to the Backup folder following that "data" directory tree.
I probably should have used ADB in the first place.
