Did some testing and found out something interesting (so far)

Vp9 seems to be the culprit (for me, again, so far.) I switched to AVC and the buffer works fine. Quality does look a tad worse though. But no buffering so far.

But when I had it on Vp9 1080 (ain't no shot I can get it to buffer higher than 1080 for some reason with 1gb internet...) the buffer could not keep up. But again, switching to AVC kinda fixes it so far. I know I'm saying "so far" alot with this, but I have trust issues with youtube, they always find a way to ruin something even on their own site/app.

Although, revanced on my phone doesn't have any issue and that's with 4k Vp9. Then again, revanced piggybacks on the original api if im not mistaken.

After recent update to this version, starting getting daily buffering issues on videos that have never previously had issues.

Had tried changing playback from Automatic to 1080p AVC to see if this changes things.

(Smart TV as well, so wasn't sure if networking issue, of the Vp9 codec on my TV issue etc...)

same. buffering is getting worse, week by week. Reducing quality to 720 usually helps fix the issue. But 6 months ago, I never had any issue.

FWIW, I haven't had any buffering issues over the last four days via AVC (instead of Vp9)

I've been having buffering problems for a couple of months with this app. Before that, it worked fine. Every update seems to make it worse, as if development is moving away from a solution, instead of towards it. It's almost unusable for me at present.

I've found that toggling the wireless connection off and on again, usually fixes it for a short period.

I'm back, that fix i posted above that worked for me, no longer works. Buffering has gotten to the point i can't even play lower then 720p. Google must have done something. Cause the app is almost unusable and I've tried every other option I could think of with 0 results. Shame.

In my case, this was due to the network engine changing randomly and causing lots of buffering. Cronet is the only one that works well for me.

Go to Settings > Player > Network engine and check to see if the setting is where you left it. If not, this may be your problem.

So I tried a setting last night that was suggested by the dev and it seemed to fix the problem. Go to Settings > Player > Developer Options and enable 'Disable automatic network error fixing'

I also have 'Prefer IPv4 DNS' enabled there.

First quick test - things are much better! Thank you!
