Layer drop down not populating

I'm pretty new to the world of GIS, and kind of learning stuff along the way. I couldn't get qgistilemillexport to build properly, so I just dropped it in the plugins folder, and activated it via the plugin manager. Everything seems to work fine, but the layer drop down is always empty. Running in qgis 1.8 on Mac OS X mountain lion. Thank you for any help.

Looks like this will need a bunch of work to load with the new QGIS anyways, I'm getting all sorts of plugin and python errors.
