Description

Reddit now returns 429 Too Many Requests for any video downloading over youtube-dl. Not affected by rate-limiting, as even the first video downloaded over youtube-dl will fail immediately.
The video plays completely fine in browser both while logged in and on fresh private tabs, so this is likely related to Reddit detecting youtube-dl.
Using various headers (user agent etc.) to imitate a browser has had no effect.
Other generic downloading programs like wget return 200 OK.

Temporary workaround:

Export your logged-in cookies with an extension (e.g. get cookies.txt for chrome)
Add the cookies to your youtube-dl command as documented in the readme (--cookies /path/to/cookies.txt)

{In response to deleted comment]Are you saying that it doesn't like the composite UA string used by yt-dl, or only if it's over-used? The original report says that using different UA strings had no effect.

Trying wget -U xxx 'https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/comments/ppbsg1.json' with various UA strings (and none), I don't see any issue. But then the yt-dl command works fine too for me.

I've had this happen too but only on yt-dl for Mac OS for a day or two, works fine if I use Linux Both using 2021.06.06 on Intel chips

OS: manjaro - YT : latest update - Getting 429 for reddit only

Update: https://www.reddit.com/r/youtubedl/comments/pr46uk/429_error_when_downloading_from_reddit/ I solved it by running - - cookie-from-browser chromium (edge)

Update 2: Having the same problem and --cookie... doesn't solve it this time

By removing lines from cookies.txt until the command failed, I have determined that the only necessary cookie is reddit_session. Have that cookie and the download works--no matter what you set it to, as far as I can tell.

@AjaxGb I had the same effect on me, I added a copy of the session_tracker cookie and edited the name to reddit_session and wrote random letters for the data and it worked for me. I'm on Debian 11, but I have compiled youtube-dl from source, so I'm running the latest version

Cookies workaround is also now patched. Using logged in cookies still results in 403 Forbidden. Loads and plays completely fine in browser and private tabs, and HTML retrieves successfully using a blank wget. Proxies have no effect.

Only working workaround that I have right now is to extract the .m3u8 playlist URL directly from the browser. Inspect Element on the video player, find the data-hls-url property of the video-* div and pass it to youtube-dl after stripping HTTP parameters. Reddit does not seem to be filtering requests to direct resources.

My "broader" location is Southern Europe; also, I don't routinely download from reddit... My gut feeling is they're blocking wide IP pools based on excessive yt-dl web requests originating from them...

I've tested this from proxies with static IPs that have had virtually no activity for months, so that seems to be a good guess. This still doesn't explain how it's being detected since opening the page in any other service will return 200. Is there some specific profile associated with youtube-dl's HTTP requests, like TLS fingerprinting?

Also, sites may be fronted through Cloudflare-like services that may apply different opaque policies to police traffic, depending on location, etc.

Regarding the Reddit extractor, as I pointed out before, it's easy to identify since it gets a URL not used in a browser session (at least, not now), and that's the one that gets 429-ed.

@pukkandan i've been getting this error again non stop. Using latest version of yt-dlp with gallery-dl to scrape subreddits and after about 30 posts I run into this error and each post afterwards has this error. My yt-dlp config is this:
