there is no "On My iPad" -> MAME4iOS on my ipad folder
iPados 14.4
its difficult to mange rom
Are you talking about Files.app
? I see it just fine, or are you doing something else?
The best way to get ROMs into MAME4iOS is to just Import...
AirDrop, or Share a ZIP File. But manually works too.
@Reisen1969 were you able to locate the MAME4iOS folder in Files.app?
I have seen the MAME4iOS
disappear from the Files.app
before, I dont know why. Debugging related??
For example it is missing from my iPad right now. Was there last time???

hi,Frist time i install it,”On My iPad “ is existing. When I installed the second time, the folder disappeared,so I created folder manually. the manual folder can not be recognized by MAME4iOS but it had icon. I haven't played for a long time because of my busy work
I’ve having this issue now. A month or two ago I moved my roms folder out of the way before deactivating in AltStore (so the backup doesn’t bloat) and then just reactivated MAME4iOS just now.
MAME4iOS comes up like a fresh install and concerned I’ve lost my database and all the curation I’ve done :(
I literally rebooted the app to extract my list of favorites & start merging things 🙄
ok -I have some good news. I deactivated MAME4iOS so I could export its backup (in AltStore). Turns out both the Library and Documents folders (of MAME4iOS.app) still exist and just not shown by Files.app (whether this is a bug in AltStore or Files.app I don’t know but inclined to say the latter given how many bugs I’ve run into over 2.5 years!)
The Documents folder contains all the mame subdirectories so worst case I can just use the list of nvram files as a starting point.
However, there is a Preferences folder in the Library folder which has a plist that contains all my favorites - yeay!
I found a plist to json converter so I could work with a JSON editor. It looks powerful w data transforms and can’t for the life of me figure out how to do anything useful yet 😅 Since it’s a regular text file now, I’ll just grep name mame4iOS.json
and call it a day.
My data is safe so after I do this, I will reactivate MAME4iOS again and upgrade to the latest MAME4IOS release and see if the folder magically comes back so I can drag my roms folder back in.
if anyone else has better ideas on how to get the MAME4iOS folder back in the “On My iPad” directory, let us know!
ok - we’re back in business, kinda. I can see the app folder again in “On My iPad” 🎉
I upgraded to the 2022.4-139 release and notice there is now a “Show Files” button. was this implemented because the folder was disappearing all the time? (if so, I can see how this issue might be considered closed)
in any case, for some reason, the app decided to start fresh with empty directories.
thankfully I had a backup so I just deleted all the folders and replaced them with the old ones (including the roms
directory I moved aside). The titles
directory had over 7k+ files and couldn’t find any documentation as to what this MAME sub-directory is for so I’m just leaving it empty and let MAME rebuild it if needed. [i now see it’s a custom thumbnail directory!]
so what’s missing are my favorites. @yoshisuga I still have a backup of my old preferences plist that contains all my favorites [and recents]. any way to import my favorites (via .plist) back into the app?
Yea the folder not showing in Files.app
appears to be a weird iOS bug, maybe related to what AltStore
is doing. A reboot of the device has fixed things for me in the past. NOTE if the bundle ident of the app changes, then the folder going away makes sense, iOS tracks storage via the bundle ident.
BUT the proper way to backup MAME4iOS
is to do a a Settings
> Export
this will create a ZIP
file with all your romsets, saved games, settings, etc.... that you can Import
later to restore things.
