Add DESTDIR support to Makefile

Please support the use of the DESTDIR variable in your Makefile.

I did not know that was a convention. Does the existing PREFIX variable meet your needs? The current default is PREFIX = /usr/local.

Happy for a PR that makes it play nicer

No, DESTDIR is different from PREFIX.
