Linux Installation Path Setup and distro tabs

Open jthegedus opened this issue 6 years ago • 7 comments

It is not :100: clear on the Linux tab of the Installation page that there are important instructions below the details of each Distro.

Most people will be using the top 2-3 distros listed and will run the appropriate commands and then move on without scrolling to the end of the page, there is no indication that a critical installation step is at the end of the page.

A few suggested solutions:

  • have a navigation guide for the headings on the page (or add the page's headings below the page link in the right-hand nav guide)
  • move all distros to tabs within the Linux tab. This way only one distro is shown and the following headings are not seen as unimportant to the user.

I've seen a number of discussions now where people have missed the Path Setup section because they have not scrolled (myself included), re: https://github.com/yarnpkg/yarn/issues/648#issuecomment-370142902

I started working on this in #592 but never finished it. Would you like to take a look and try to rebase it?

I will indeed give that a look. I was hesitant to start an issue since this is so trivial, but am glad I did as I didn't see the existing work. This will save me some time  I should have time to update the PR within the fortnight, cheers.

Completed in #592

I spoke too soon. It seems the Path Setup section from the Alternatives section should appear as a Post install step on all *nix OS selections (or at least the Ubuntu one).

The main criticism previously was that this step is generally required by most but was hidden. Being under a different Install option/selection does not address bubbling this up.

Two suggested solutions:

  • copy the *nix section from the Alternatives selection to each of the *nix selections.
  • add a red warning & link at the end of each of the *nix sections to point to the Alternatives section.

The first is preferred IMO.

Oh, good point. Feel free to submit a pull request for this, otherwise I may do it at some point. 👍

What would be the preferred option? Duplicating or a strongly worded & highlighted redirect?

Duplicating is fine. We already show the path stuff for RC and nightly releases for some Linux distros where you need to use the installer rather than the package (eg. select CentOS nightly on the download page), we could instead just show that all the time.
