project name
Hi, I'm the main author of the text editor on Medium.com.
Some people have told me they're confused about whether this project is our editor or not. When talking to people about it, we have to continuously clarify "wait, are we talking about medium-editor or the Medium editor now?"
Could you change the name of this project?
It doesn't seem like a good name for the project anymore, which has grown beyond a simple clone. I'm flattered by the name, and like this project, and the work you're doing. I wish people RTFM and understood that this project is unrelated. But they don't. As-is the package name is misleading.
I understand that a name change is a bunch of work. Hopefully, changing the name will have long-term benefits for you as well. Thanks for considering!
@nicks I'm a fan of both your editor on Medium and this library. And now that we have you here, a question which I have been wanting to ask for long -
Any plans or chance that Medium (or you) would open source the editor or related parts of it? I think it would be a great boost and source of learning not just to this library but the general state of RTEs.
Hey @nicks, thanks for bringing this up. We have discussed it a couple of times already, and will discuss again now. I'm the one to blame for the name in the first place, I never expected this project to be nearly as popular as it is, was just a fun weekend hack.
I agree with you, changing the name might be good for us so we don't limit ourselves regarding the UI and also will make people stop asking for Medium features, but as you said it will be a lot of work and it will affect not only our project but the community extensions.
We will update this issue when we have a final decision. Was never our intention to cause you guys any trouble, so sorry about that.
@nicks Hello! I'm Interested in the Medium.com editor. I have looked at many alternatives but it wasn't quite the same. I wanted to make one myself but didn't know where to start. would you (or the group) open source the editor? Im sure that it will help many people including me. Thank you. Best Regards, Tahir
@nicks what preventing medium from open sourcing their hugely demanded editor? Shouldn't it be the top priority. Also, changing this project's name to something else may make it difficult for others looking for a similar open source editor.
