limit usage with bsleep bfactor does not work?

Open buttery12 opened this issue 6 years ago • 5 comments

i have a gtx 760 with 2gb.

i am using: --cuda-bsleep=100 --cuda-bfactor=12 --cuda-launch=12x18

my goal is that the miner uses only about 40/50 % of the gpu due to a heat problem. with the configuration i posted above it uses 100%

if i increase --cuda-bsleep=100 to 101 or 200 it uses only about 4% and does not mine at all.

am i doing something wrong or is that a bug? could someone tell me how to make the miner use not all resources?

You not telling what kind of heat problem you're having. You can reduce temperature by reducing threads, blocks, core and memory speeds but I think that first thing you should do is to change heat transfer material between your gpu die and heatsink.

Hello tudde,

i already reduced the blocks and cores low a very low value. But even with those low values the GPU usage is at 100% - so it still produces a lot of heat.

so i tried to set the bsleep factor to a higher value. but when i set it higher than 100 the miner does not mine anymore. with bsleep set to 120 it uses only ~5% of the gpu but with bsleep 100 it uses 100%.

i am not able to configurate the miner to use only about 50% of the gpu. could it be possible that we can set the bfactor value higher than 12 in the next version?

thanks for the tip with the heat transfer material. :)

I have the same problem. GTX 960-2GB. Always the GPU at 100%, even if you change bsleep and bfactor. The hash decreases, but the GPU is 100%. The pc is very slow always with or I want to use only 50%, but I do not get it

Quote from "Nicehashdev" about the same problem:

That is not how GPUs work. It is not like CPU, where if you set execution cap to 50%, you get exactly 50% of performance.

We are talking with NVIDIA and already proposed some adjustments to be made, but that may happen no sooner than with CUDA 9.5 which means we are stuck with current options for another half a year at least.

My advice is to buy very cheap additional GPU card for only OS GUI so you can use your system without lags.

As for the heat problem, just replace the thermal paste to some premium and clean it from dust.

U need a video card bigger than 2 gb memory 3 gb and it still pushing it
