Halo CE: slow downs on some visual effects.

Open dron1885 opened this issue 2 years ago • 8 comments

Title

https://xemu.app/titles/4d530004/#Halo-Combat-Evolved

Version USA, rev 2

Bug Description

During some effects - blur on exiting sleep pod, zooming with a weapon, FPS drastically drops. When setting scale to more than x1 drop is more severe. Otherwise FPS is stable.

It seems to happen when there is surf_download/surf_upload in Debug-Video.

Expected Behavior

No drops in FPS, smooth gameplay.

Same issue both with Windows 10 version and different version of Halo CE iso

OS: Debian unstable GL_VENDOR: Intel Open Source Technology Center GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2) GL_VERSION: 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 21.3.4 GL_SHADING_LANGUAGE_VERSION: 4.50

The issue does not occurred with Flatpak build on my system, but occurred on builds compiled from scratch.

Update: As of latest updates I wasn't able to replicate the issue in the same extent it occurred, as the effects did slow down the game but in a very minuscule magnitude. Both on Flatpak and self-compiled build.

Performance problem still happening.

I remember trying Halo around Nov 2021 when Windows 11 launched, did a dual boot with Pop OS (5.14 kernel I think?), XEMU just reached 6.0.0 around then I believe, this problem didn't exist.

I also didn't try the "Version USA, rev 2", the 3 GB ISO version back then. Tried the 1 GB 7[!] version. Maybe that will show a difference? I'll have to check tomorrow.

I am also seeing the slowdown on this and a few other games. It seems to happen when rendering shaders or transparency effects.

Halo CE: normally runs a stable 30fps, but drops to 14fps when pistol is zoomed. I tested iso versions 1.0, 1.1 (rev1), and 1.2 (rev2) and all behave the same way.

Gun Valkyrie: normally runs a stable 60fps, drops to 10fps when dashing.

I'm running Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS and the latest flatpak version of xemu.

Also affects Silent Scope Complete

I was having a very smooth run at 1x, until I reached the end of the first portion of The Silent Cartographer. When I went into the building that led to the security panel, the framerate drops to around 14 fps, only rarely returning to 30 momentarily when in a flat/brightly lit area. Whenever the camera faces a darker area, the framerate drops to 14 again.

Further notes. The slowness didn't last especially long after this. However it came back with the control room cutscene, and not only was the frame rate low (and the scene overall) but also, a huge solid black shadow appears beneath Master Chief during part of the scene. After, things went back to normal.

Later there is a cutscene from another character's perspective, with an overlay. This is slow, and "FFW" and PLAY graphics usually appeared over each other.

Due to frame rate in these scenes, SFX / voice goes out of sync with animations.

I also have slow downs on Halo CE USA vers 2 while on steam deck. On some cut scenes, frames would drop to 15, then while playing on the PoA trying to zoom in with the magnum will also drop the frames. I have experienced the cut scene frame drop on all games I have, Halo CE, Halo 2, Star wars Republic Commando, and The Clone wars.

Due to the last comment being from almost a year ago, reporting that the bug still does exist despite significant input latency improvements. I've also ran testing to find that, even on 2 player splitscreen, the bug does not present itself on 1x internal resolution and only begins to appear at 2x. Otherwise, even at 10x internal resolution on my machine, framerates and mspf are stable.
