This is totally related to my setup, but allowing click (touch in my case) to select a step would be really nice. I didn't investigate further but the UI library...

One of the nicest things in the digitakt imo! seems rather complex to implement and a lot UX/UI involved. DT screen for reference: 
A step without any note trigger . That would allow to control only midi cc messages.
