Twinkle Tray causing Dell monitor to become unresponsive
I'm having this issue with Twinkle Tray where my monitor becomes unresponsive once the screen has timed out.
The monitor is a Dell S2721DGF connected to my Dell XPS 15 9510 via an RTX 3070 in a thunderbolt eGPU enclosure. I have a secondary display connected, an Acer S241HL which manages to behave normally when twinkle tray is active. Basically when i return to the computer i wake shake the mouse to turn the displays back on and I can see that both monitors turn back on and the panel on the acer monitor lights up but the Dell monitor does not, the power light shows as though it's on and the lighting on the back of the monitor also lights up but the panel is totally black. I have read that some dell monitors have some power saving sleep features that can cause similar issues to arise but this monitor appears to not have them (since its a gaming monitor I imagine its more performance oriented than the office monitors that are more likely to be deployed in professional settings and therefor lacks these options) I also have gone through the twinkle tray app and prevented it from modifying any settings on the monitor other than the ability to alter the display brightness but no luck. I also tried disabling the automatic input switching feature on the monitor as some people had issues with this montitor and other dell gaming monitors becoming unresponsive with that but again it hasnt helped
I've tried other monitor control programs but none feel as polished as twinkle tray however having it running seems to cause my monitor to lose its mind.
Having the same issue on two S2721DGF, both monitors go unresponsive a few minutes after they're turned off by the system, and the only way to make them work again is to unplug them from the outlet and plug them in again.
Oh yeah, I should have mentioned that hard resetting the monitor by unplugging its power cable returns it to normal working order. My imperfect solution is to just never have windows turn the screens off but its a still a pain as it can happen when i sleep my laptop too.
Glad I'm not the only person with this issue, my initial thought was something to do with my moderately obscure setup with the egpu and such was the thing causing the issue but looks like it could be some strange oddity of the firmware on the monitors and how TwinkleTray interacts with them.
A further update, just changed my system and the problem has persisted. Interestingly though, the LCD layer is active but its the backlight not activating as holding a torch to the display makes the screen visible
Exact same issue is happening with my Dell S2721DGF which is also plugged into a 3070.
Hi all, I'm not able to replicate the issue on my end, but it sounds like it's monitor specific. Try enabling this setting and let me know if it helps:
Also, could one of you provide the "Internal name" of the S2721DGF from that same "Debug" tab? Thanks!
I'll give it a go, Here is the monitor info:

@xanderfrangos The disable auto apply setting appears to resolve the issue for me, thanks!

Yeah, Same here, and I'm very glad, very handy tool
I have two S2721DGF monitors, and the same issue. It doesn't happen every time, but almost.
In my case, "Disable Auto Apply" did not fix the problem, and for good measure I tried Disable Auto Refresh as well which also didn't help.
Video card is a 1060, and these two are connected via DP plus there's a third old Philips 221E via HDMI. Twinkletray can't control the Philips and it isn't affected by this problem.
DELL S2721DGF
Name: DELL S2721DGF
Internal name: DEL41D9
Communication Method: DDC/CI
The 1.16.0-beta5.3 changelog says:
Added a potential workaround for DEL41D9 monitors not waking up due to brightness values being re-applied at a bad time.
I can confirm this hasn't fixed the problem. (v1.16.0-beta5.3 e25b507)
Have the same issue with my Dell S2721DGF. I downgraded to 1.13.10. That version does not have the issue.

I'll see if I can track down any differences since that version that might point me in the right direction. If anyone else can confirm that 1.13.10 is the last version that worked for this monitor, that would be quite helpful.

That's really good to know. I had given up on TwinkleTray because of this issue and just came back to see if there'd been any progress. I will try downgrading to that version when I get home and see if it works.
@xanderfrangos I just noticed earlier in this thread that "Disable Auto Apply" worked for some people but I don't see that option in the latest beta version (I had upgraded in hopes of fixing this issue). Was it removed or renamed? Is there another setting you recommend trying instead?
Never mind, I see it's been moved into the General settings
Will give it a try and report back.
Turning off Auto-apply brightness worked for me. I'm been running the latest beta with that feature for most of the past week on two different systems that are connected to the same Dell display (different inputs) and it has not locked up once.
Even on the latest beta and having auto-apply brightness, I still have my Dell U2518D monitor black screen and require manually unplugging to reset. Unfortunately I have to use another program at this point until this is fixed.
Had same issue with two Acer XV282KKV. I've enabled "Power state" for both monitors in DDC/CI Features in Twinkle Tray settings - so far so good. No unresponsiveness for about a week
That still didn't solve it for me unfortunately.
Hey all, v1.16.0-beta6 may (finally) resolve these issues. One user so far has reported that it helped.
Only the Dell S2721DGF (internal name: "DEL41D9") is hard-coded with the fix by default. If you have a different monitor that's affected by this issue, you'll need to enable the following setting for that monitor:
This is found under General -> Troubleshooting
in v1.16.0-beta6.
Let me know if it helps or not.
Although the frequency may be less (although it's hard to tell), even with the above fix "skip auto-apply", I'm still having issues with the Dell U2520D.
