[Bug] WebView hyperlink click navigation doesn't contain clicked URL on Android

Description

I am unable to find out what url has been clicked in the WebView control on Android. All I'm getting in the clicked url is about:blank#blocked.

This works on other platforms, when I click <a href="someLink">Click me</a> on other platforms I get:

  • UWP: about:someLink
  • iOS: file:///Users/developteam/Library/Developer/CoreSimulator/Devices/746A160A-BC2F-429F-AFFF-5D9D7B6F977C/data/Containers/Bundle/Application/3A46B8F3-30D2-4F35-9EC8-CB6FA738C5F7/XfWebViewApp01.iOS.app/www.baseUrl.org/test/someLink

Steps to Reproduce

1. Create a new Xamarin.Forms app

2. Place a WebView control on the MainPage and subscribe to it's Navigating event

3. Load some HTML into the WebView

4. Click a hyperlink. The hyperlink I'm clicking looks like this:

Expected Behavior

The Navigating event's WebNavigatingEventArgs's Url property contains the clicked url (someLink) as it does on iOS and UWP.

Actual Behavior

The Navigating event's WebNavigatingEventArgs's Url property is about:blank#blocked. No way to find out what url was clicked.

I've done some further research and this is what I found: The e.Url works just fine when using a UrlWebViewSource and clicking on an anchor on a website with a valid SSL certificate. If I click an anchor using this setup, e.Url contains the actual clicked url.

The problem seems to occur when using the HtmlWebViewSource to load HTML locally from string and specifying the BaseUrl.

Still doesn't work. I've also opened the same issue in the .NET MAUI repo.

I've figured it out! It was my fault all along.

The problem was an invalid base url. Specifically, my base url was missing a url scheme.

Loading the source in the following way resulted in link clicks returning about:blank#blocked:

TheWebView.Source = new HtmlWebViewSource
{
    BaseUrl = "www.base-url.org/test/",
    Html = Properties.Resources.exampleHtml
};

All I needed to do was add https:// (or another url scheme, I guess) and it works!

TheWebView.Source = new HtmlWebViewSource
{
    BaseUrl = "https://www.base-url.org/test/", // <-- this works!
    Html = Properties.Resources.exampleHtml
};

Now, when I click an anchor link, the WebNavigatingEventArgs.Url has the value of https://www.base-url.org/test/myAnchorLink.
