I saw that there was a Discord link in the example issue but it seems to be invalid now.

So, what does this bot do? Can it be sent to specific islands and act as a player?

No, it's only intended to be used in the lobby. Matchmaking with a non-official client is heavily against Epic's TOS and no one has even reverse engineered being able to actually load into the game and I doubt they ever will as its a complicated process. You can view commands page in the wiki to see what the bot can do.
