They probably want to be able to make the phone wipe after being touched by some NFC device like a card or tag etc.

For Snowden it is. Think if you are a journalist in a dangerous, dictatorship country. Police break in your hotel, and you have just the time to touch your device with nfc tag and wipe starts...

Any other idea?

Scan QR code and wipe automatically starts?!?!? Can be useful for some scenario?

There is a Tile trigger. Simply press quick settings tile and got wiped. Suppose it is faster.
