The 8.0.3 UI rehaul is not very user-friendly

Open dodancs opened this issue 1 month ago • 4 comments

EasyEffects Version

8.0.3

What package are you using?

Arch (easyeffects)

Distribution

Arch Linux

Describe the bug

I just updated my packages, and noticed that easyeffects completely changed the gui. I noticed it, because my presets weren't autoloading so I opened it up, and after searching through all menus, I cannot find the autoloading feature.

Expected Behavior

Autoloading should be there as it was before.

Hi. This is the new location

Ahh, now I found it. You need to click on Presets in the top left menu, then up top is a tab for autoloading.

I must say tho, that the UI interface is much less user-friendly. For example, I don't see which preset is currently selected at a glance. I need to open the Presets pop-up and look down to find out. Also, the local presets list loads in gradually, slowly expanding the list entries one by one, so their height changes when I want to click on them. Also, the effects panel is not very readable in dark mode (the selected entry is much brighter blue, but gets unfocused when I take a screenshot):

I also think that some effects' settings were reset when they got migrated to 8.0.3 from 7.2.5-2. Besides that, the spectrum analyzer bar graph does not always render, I mean even if audio is playing, there are no bars.

If I remember well the previous interface also needed the presets menu to be shown.

You may be seeing the same as #4395. It feels like a Qt bug. Even on my laptop that has a weak cpu it is not that like this.

Also, the effects panel is not very readable in dark mode (the selected entry is much brighter blue, but gets unfocused when I take a screenshot)

This is something that probably should be fixed in the theme and not in EasyEffects. Technically it is possible to force a different color but that is guaranteed to make things worse for people using different desktop themes.

I also think that some effects' settings were reset when they got migrated to 8.0.3 from 7.2.5-2.

Gtk and Qt handle applications settings in completely different ways. To the point that writing a migration code becomes quite challenging when we consider all the possible settings an user can have when running EasyEffects. Presets from the older version are still compatible. So reloading them will bring almost all of the previous settings back.

Besides that, the spectrum analyzer bar graph does not always render, I mean even if audio is playing, there are no bars.

Maybe the same as #4394?

I concur this update has brought the accessibility down significantly.

I am now stuck with the light theme and do not know how to change it despite going to Preferences and searching for the option to do so. Why is it not included there? Why are no configuration options present there? I do not want to read the documentation, learn yet another configuration language, write a config file, browse the internet endlessly for solutions or hacks. I only want a dark theme in my programs which I could enable with a single button click.

Prior to the update it was fine, the program respected my system settings, but now that is broken and I consider it a significant regression.

I totally agree with @kociap and I also feel like that this update has worsen the production quality of the app in overall perspective.

Some of the things mentioned here like dark/light theme selection can be configured in the latest versions. And the autoload is just in a new location.

I am willing to listen to suggestions as long as they do not have the implicit intention of making the app going back to gtk. As I explained somewhere else #4613 that is not going to happen.
