Describe the bug

When closing the window of easyeffects sound is no longer processed by easyeffects, regardless of the fact that in the settings „Beim Schließen des Fensters beenden” (translates back to something like: "Shut down on window close") is not activated, so easyeffects is expected to stay active after window was closed.

Also when sending the command easyeffects -w or easyeffects --hide-window from a terminal window, the window is not merely hidden, but the audio processing by easyeffects is disengaged.

Expected Behavior

The audio processing by easyeffects should not stop when sending --hide-window or -w. Also it should not stop when closing the window if in settings the option „Beim Schließen des Fensters beenden” is not active.

Debug Log

can't locate the logfile supposed to be written, neither in `/home/<user>/.log` nor in /var/log and it's subfolders. Where is it supposed to be written?
Also `dmesg | tail` doesn't show any entry of easyeffects.

In some cases the reason is not starting EasyEffects in service mode. It usually does this on its own. Kill EasyEffects and run in a terminal G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=easyeffects easyeffects --gapplication-service. After this run easyeffects in another terminal window or click on its launcher icon. Does its process still die after closing its window?

As long as the user desktop runs the EasyEffects autostart file inside ~/.config/autostart/ or uses our dbus service when the our launcher icon is clicked.

Many thanks for the quick reply. This renders things clear. The service mode is never started on antiX, since XDG autostart directories are not active by default. There is a ~/.desktop-session/startup file instead, so I'll copy over the easyeffects service startup command from the ~/.config/autostart/easyeffects-service.desktop file to the proper place.

Kill EasyEffects and run in a terminal G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=easyeffects easyeffects --gapplication-service.

Works fine. Now I get full debug output on console:

And why I didn't find out this (when looking back now knowing it, relatively simple) missing link on my own? Here's why. The output of easyeffects --help didn't make clear to me there is a way to and I have to start it in a service mode other than to start easyeffects. Even the separate --help-gapplication is not clear about this, since it reads not "easyeffects service mode" but "GApplication service mode", I could not have guessed actually this is what is needed to start. It gave me the impression this is something for a very special use case, not meant for default operation:

These messages are concerning and indicate things may randomly break. The good news is that we fixed this a long time ago. Your distribution package maintainers just have to upgrade EasyEffects to the latest release.

It can´t do that because there isn't really a service in the usual meaning of the word. In order to keep things simple I used a gtk feature that is activated by the gtk command line option --gapplication-service. It allows an ordinary gui app to run in the background with its window closed. In order words EasyEffects is a gui app that pretends to be a service by running with its window closed. As we started as a gui app creating a proper service would require an insane amount of work rewriting very large chunks of our code.

Yes. Unfortunately gtk only shows the service option when running --help-all. As it is an option coming from gtk I do not think I can change this behavior.

That switch is intented to allow its process to die after its window is closed even if it started as a service. Some people wanted this. It does not make it pretend to be a service. This only happens when --gapplication-service is used.

On desktops like gnome and kde clicking on our launcher icon triggers a dbus service that shows the window already in service mode. The same should happen on any other desktop that supports dbus activatable desktop files.

The commands and switches in easyeffects are thought from the "other end of the thread", assuming the service is always started up properly, which was never the case on antiX due to antiX doesn't know about the ~/.config/autostart folder, your file sat there somewhat lonely, waiting to be cared for :) and the same time the line "DBusActivatable=true" in the .desktop file seems to have no effect, even when antiX has a rudimentary dbus support. You can access it by console commands, if you happen to know the proper syntax:

But that's not the way things are done on antiX by default. As said, the "DBusActivatable=true" line in .desktop file is silently ignored obviously, it makes no difference whether it is started by the main menu entry (only containing the extracted command from "Exec=easysffects" line (besides the Icon), or whether running from calling the .desktop file directly, containing the string referring to dbus. In neither case the needed service mode is started.

Btw, is there a way I can ask easyeffects via dbus-send what preset currently is loaded? Or is there another way to ask it from commandline to return this piece of information? I know I can set it by --load-preset, but how can I check from command line beforehand what preset is currently loaded?

Not having read your links pointing to gnome org from above by now, in my tiny bashscript providing a small GUI to select easily between some few default presets, I'll do it that way now, making sure easyeffects is running deamonised, otherwise killing running instance and restart it the proper way you've explained to me, many thanks again:

Possibly something like that could be done by easyeffects itself already, so it would kill itself, fire up it's demonised mode and reload iteslf to full action finally, if it finds the switch in it's config set to "stay processing after window close" and it was called not with --gapplication-service option beforehand, or just continue to start up normally if either switch in GUI is set the other way, or it finds itself already deamonised. Not sure whether this can be done in C as easily as I can do it in bashscript. Not being a programmer, sorry. So please take this as a draft for a possible workflow merely.

The good news is that we fixed this a long time ago. Your distribution package maintainers just have to upgrade EasyEffects to the latest release.

I've guessed this, since I've tried to import latest packaged version as an alien from debian unstable (sid) to antiX 23 (bookworm based). With this version all these error messages are gone, ~~but the same time all the filters fail to load, complaining with myriads of error lines printed to console and showing empty GUI filter fields. I guess the debian maintainers will have to fix something before the more recent version will be avialable.~~ Retested right now, as before from debian sid repos, and the filters work again. This is from easyeffects version 7.1.3

Maybe the antiX devs decide to build a package from your most recent version, but antiX is a small team of devs merely, so probably they rather will wait for debian, as long there is no systemd or elogind dependency found in a package (in this case it must be repackaged to work on antiX properly. Luckily this doesn't apply to easyeffects).

Let me take the oportunity and say thank you so very much for your great work! Easyeffects is a really fine piece of software. And I'm saying this, having worked many many years ago for some semesters in the audio studio of our university, everything was still analogue those days. So I know what I'm talking about.

Maybe instead we can make it more clear how Shutdown on window closing works by showing a little "restart required" orange text thingy if the user unchecks it while easyeffects is running as a regular app.

It is fine to change its label. But I am not sure I understand how the "restart required" will help to clarify the situation in this case.

Btw, is there a way I can ask easyeffects via dbus-send what preset currently is loaded? Or is there another way to ask it from commandline to return this piece of information? I know I can set it by --load-preset, but how can I check from command line beforehand what preset is currently loaded?

Not through dbus. But there is another way. Take a look at #916. You can using the command line to read these keys Screenshot from 2024-01-12 12-38-50

You just have to adjust the paths in the examples I linked at #916 to the ones in EasyEffects.

No. You shouldn't ignore. The first warning related to the lv2_wrapper is happening because the Linux Studio Plugins package in the Debian repository is not compatible with the latest EasyEffects releases. At some point Linux Studio went through changes that required some updates on our side. Upgrading Linux Studio will fix the issue.

The other warning about the Filter plugin may also be happening because of an old Linux Studio Plugin package. Or the attempt to load a preset that is not compatible with the latest EasyEffects releases. At some point we moved from the Filter from Calf Studio to the one from Linux Studio.

The downside of using the Debian package is that one of the Noise Reduction plugins is disabled for license reasons that only Debian seems to care about. So if you want this plugin without having to go through the process of building your own packages installing a Flatpak package is an option to consider https://github.com/wwmm/easyeffects/wiki/Package-Repositories#flatpak.
