Junk text being added to prompt in R for Ubuntu

After sending a command to the R repl, over time junk text starts to accumulate at the command prompt and I have to hit enter several times to "send" this junk code to the R and clear the command prompt. Is this a known issue, and is there a workaround? I'm using Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu 16.04.
