I think telemetry is needed

I know that sometimes in open-source communities telemetry is frowned upon. I don't understand the hate. As long as it's obvious it is happening and you can turn it off, I don't see the issue.

Working on WTF and making decisions on which modules to give priority to when triaging issues is very hard. Part of that difficulty is not knowing which modules are popular, barely used, or even worse, completely unused. Take for example #1922. I've already put in a ton of time today trying to determine what the issue is, what possible solutions there are, and now trying to come up with a PR.

I would had to be doing all this work if not a single WTF user is using that module. Telemetry would help make these decisions much easier.

From my own history of maintenance here, you kind of have to pick your battles. Some subset of these are/were services that don't really have free tiers/maintaining meaningful free tiers is time consuming.

Realistically, I focused on items that were impactful to me/categories that were pretty universal (a lot of time on todo stuff). I spent a bunch of time tryimg to generalize in hope that some of this could be a mapping problem in a more general module.

A large number of these modules were community contributions for software maintainers did not use. If something is not working and no one is willing to submit fixes that make sense to them as a user and you don't use them yourself, well here you are.
