Equation going over equation number

Is there a way for the equation breaking before it reaches the equation number box? Usually, it either sends the equation number down (which I really dislike) or it just writes part of the equation on top of the equation number. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to set some kind of penalty or margin to avoid this kind of result?
