Improving the "select your camera / microphone" selection
Feedback received today:
just wanted to let you know about the most common feedback we are receiving. In almost every event, there are people experiencing issues with the correct audio device settings. Especially in groups that are not extremely tech-savvy. Obviously, the people encountering this get a bad first impression and are unlikely to use WorkAdventure again (or promote it to other colleagues). Most people expect it to run without flaws instantly (we had one guy saying he doesn’t have the time for correcting the settings and he just left). We don’t want to miss out on those people and create the best first impression of WorkAdventure. In my experience, many users skip the configuration menu in the intro. Personally, I think right now it is a bit confusing and visually not intuitive enough for some users. ... My experience is that some people are skipping the configuration part of the microphone in the first-user menu because its not clear and delayed (just like in the video). It also puts a lot of emphasis mainly on the camera (when the correct mic is probably even more important). Changing the settings afterwards is also a little bit complicated (the menu is only labbeled camera settings and forces users to reload). Changing it without reloading (like in jitsi) would be awesome
We should consider reworking the "select your camera / microphone" scene.
- [ ] When we arrive on the screen and when no authorization has been granted or denied, the drop-down to select a webcam or microphone is not displayed. Those dropdown should instead be displayed with a label saying "Authorization needed" (or something like that)
- [ ] If we do not get ANY feedback from the microphone (if the output is only made of 0) and we never receive anything else, we should probably display a warning label: "Warning! Your microphone seems muted." (and if there is more than 1 microphone available in the list, display an additional message: "try selecting another microphone")
- [ ] When the microphone is selected, the first time, we could try to scan all microphones available and select by default a microphone that has some sound output
- [ ] Proposal: right now, there is a big "Let's go" button displayed on the camera selection screen. Maybe we should display a big orange button "Skip camera and microphone settings" until the camera and microphone are completely set up?
- [ ] We need to ensure the currently selected microphone / camera is passed to Jitsi (we can do this with the options.device setting)
- [ ] We should make changing the camera / microphone easy, just like in Jitsi (using a small array next to the mic/cam buttons)
Note to everybody: if you have ideas to improve the user experience regarding camera / microphone selection, or if you have good examples of application that do this very well, please add comments below!
An additional point is to include it in the first user tutorial, too e.g. "is
One possible quick win would be to place the current menu-item profile > change camera settings (which is worded misleadingly) in the settings area and rename it.
Another point is the settings diverging if you choose a new device in Jitsi e.g. choose a different camera/mic. If you return to a circle afterward the setting is lost, which can be frustrating.
Regarding good examples, we should probably take a look at the american counterpart :)
Hey guys, any roadmap plans for this? IMO the most important improvement in business context (apart from 0365 integration) for reaching a broader audience aside from innovators / early adaptors
I see camera / mic detection and usage being implemented very well in "spatial.chat". When disabled, camera is e.g. "released" for usage in other apps. Camera selection in Forefox works well. I'd wish to have the same in workadventure :-)
