Rename 'Publish' Button to 'Next' for improved clarity in Scheduling Posts

Open pmusolino opened this issue 8 months ago • 3 comments

This is a UX issue. I was trying to schedule a post but couldn't find the settings. I later realized they are hidden under the "Publish" button, which I expected to be tapped only at the end of the process. Instead of labeling it "Publish," it would be better to call it "Next" or something similar. The final button for users looking to edit visibility, publish date, tags, or categories is "Publish", which should be reserved for actually publishing a post.

It's definitely worth solving, especially for first-time users. If you are an existing user, you learn it.

There are a couple of other caveats and issues:

  1. It is consistent with the web

  1. Most of these settings are available via "More", "Post Settings". You don't have to use the pre-publishing sheet. It acts mainly as a confirmation screen that also allows you to tweak some of the settings.

  2. There is an inconsistency (by design) how "Schedule Date" and "Visibility" are handled in the app. You have to set these right before publishing. You can't change these settings and save the post as a draft. With the way WordPress API works, it's potentially impossible to implement it correctly.

  3. The prepublishing sheet doesn't have some of the most common fields like "Excerpt" or "Featured Image".

If you search P2s and/or Figma, you'll find multiple proposals on how to address these, but I think none "just right".

"Publish" isn't a great title either because it's also how you schedule. "Next" is probably a better option, but it feels weird in that context – it's not a multi-step flow, although it could be.
