I followed your steps listed below and it worked once. All subsequent tabs are now default and not New Tab Reloaded.

Steps to fix this extension in Chrome 61+:

  1. Open Chrome settings and change the search engine from Google to Bing.
  2. Open a new tab page to see Bing's home page.
  3. Change the search engine back to Google.
  4. Open a new tab page and this extension will load correctly.

Unfortunately, the above steps didn't help here. Still loading default NTP.

I didn't have the Bing search engine in my list (I deleted it ages ago).. But I switched to another, and back to Google.. and I still get the default new tab page

Guess it's time to uninstall extension. Too bad, it was nice one.

This is an updated method for Chrome 62:

  1. Open Chrome settings, extensions and a new tab page. Please open the pages in this order.
  2. Switch to the settings page. Change the search engine from Google to Bing.
  3. Switch to the extensions page. Disable and then enable the "New Tab Reloaded" extension.
  4. Change the search engine back to Google.
  5. Open a new tab page and this extension will load correctly.

Does anyone have the link to Bing? I deleted the Bing engine ages ago, and it seems changing it to another engine is not doing anything. So if it have to be Bing specificially, I don't have the URL anymore.

Bing bing.com https://www.bing.com/search?q=%s&PC=U316&FORM=CHROMN

Yahoo may also work.

The fix unfortunately doesn't survive a browser restart (at least for me).
