A message from default could not be decrypted - Error

Open Filbuntu opened this issue 4 years ago • 7 comments

Describe the bug Out of a sudden I get "a message from default could not be decrypted" in many contacts, probably all with a new message! The same happened to my parents a few days ago. Is this a sign to leave Wire as many of friends are urging me to do?

To Reproduce Do nothing, wait and it may hit you.

Steps to reproduce the behavior: Open the chat with one contact and be surprised that you don't see the new messages but "a message from default could not be decrypted "

Expected behavior No error!

Screenshots If applicable, add screenshots to help explain your problem.

Smartphone (please complete the following information): Wire version 3.76.2

Additional context Login and -out did not work. Full syncronization, either. Logout, login and restore from backup, either :disappointed: I also tried to "Reset Session" within the chat of a person, it would not let me open the contact's details.

I have been a fervent Wire supporter but my patience has recently been tested a lot ... And many friends tell me to switch to another app 😞.

@Filbuntu : We sometimes get reports of this happening but so far we haven't found a way to reproduce it so no good idea why it happens. The "default" appearing instead of the name hints at that we lack the data of the other user. But it's not enough to know what's going on.

@makingthematrix Thanks a lot for the response! I am positively surprised as I have not heard anything on other github reports I am subscribed to! Wire is still alive 😉. The error was present to all contacts/other users when I tried to send/receive a new message. The same happened to somebody I know just a few days before that twice. I had to delete cache and data of the app and login again. Fortunately I am logged in on two mobile Android devices so I could restore from the backup of the other. But if I would be a normal user, I would have lost all my messages ... (as there is no automatic update and manually backup daily is too much effort). Thanks for looking into this.

@Filbuntu : Unfortunately I don't have time to look into this right now. We work on a major new version of Wire Android and most likely this bug will be gone then because the decryption handling is being rewritten from scratch. But that will take many more months.

@makingthematrix Thank you for the update! New version of Wire sounds great but many more months not really! The company behind Wire should employ more people to work on the great foundation of Wire before it is too late and other apps have won the race to replace WhatsApp.

I have also had this error, but since I only have 2 contacts, it never affects both at the same time. The instructions on how to resolve the problem, clicking on the name of the user, doesn't work, since it never opens the dialog to reset the session.

The issue still persists with 3.80.23, just ran into it, too, after a contact reported it to me yesterday... anything I can do to help debugging?
