No notification during voice calls

I noticed that while I was in an audio call, I didn't have any notification with call controls. There was a green bar while in the app, but when i pressed the home button it disappeared (ie. not visible on home screen). This is concerning because it means that while the app is in the background, there is no indication that you are in a call. I assume there is a bug where this notification wasn't created? I checked my android permissions and Wire is allowed to create notifications so I'm not sure what went wrong here.
