Troubleshooting network connections to Battle Tanks server

I'm having zero luck getting Battle Tanks client to connect to the server. On the Windows version the server listens on TCP/UDP port 27255 according to TCPview sysinternals util. A manual netcat connection test from linux client confirms the port is open. However scanning the host and then hitting join will not join the game, just kicks me back to the main menu. HALP!

Windows game version is 0.9.8083 Linux game version is 0.9 as found in flathub
